Let me state up front that I believe that Laura Hillenbrand is an amazing writer. I truly believe that she could write about paint drying and find a way to make it interesting and compelling. She has an amazing gift and I will read anything and everything that she ever puts onto paper.

That said, let's get on to reviewing this book. WOW. That about sums it up. Just WOW. It's an incredible read ... interesting, captivating and informative. I can't believe that I'd never heard of Louis Zamperini.

Most critics made the inevitable between Seabiscuit and Unbroken, noting that although the protagonists differ (one couldn't speak, after all), the stories follow roughly the same narrative trajectory and offer beautifully written, dramatic tales of overcoming adversity. Yet even those who admitted Unbroken is nothing but riveting offered criticism. Perhaps most serious, a few critics thought that, despite Hillenbrand's 75 interviews with Zamperini, she failed to dig below the surface of his leg ...more

I am a huge reader of WW II fiction and nonfiction, primarily the European theater. This biography about Louis Zamperini, a Pacific POW, is the first book pertaining to the Pacific theater I have read, and it is absolutely unforgettable. I knew nothing about Mr. Zamperini prior to reading this biography which worked in my favor as it allowed the story to unfold without my ever being able to guess what would come next. I am filled with admiration for Mr. Zamerpini's inspiring heroics, fortitude a ...more

Incredible true story of the life of a man who was born a rambunctious child and then grew to be a soldier in WWII. Among many things, one of the things that I enjoyed most about this book was that it focused on Japan and America during WWII and not Europe and the Nazis.

Highly recommended to all; another book that makes me feel grateful for the life that I have and how the bad things in my life are really just trivial annoyances.

The story of Louie Zampirini will not leave me. This brave man, now 93 years old, survived years of torture both physical and mental that would kill most people. Louie survived and even though I know he lives today I am in awe of how he made it through the crash of his B-24 into the Pacific, the days after, the three POW camps and then life after all of this. His story is amazing. I want to know him and shake his hand. Never will I look at a POW flag, sign, or man without tears and the utmost re ...more

Brilliant! Mesmerizing! Fearless!

UNBROKEN is the true story of Louis Zamperini. As a boy, Louie was a holy terror, always in trouble and running from authority. His brother helped Louie channel his energy into running competitively, and through a combination of talent and pure stubbornness, Zamperini made it to the Berlin Olympics, on pace to surpass the four-minute mile. Like many able-bodied men of that era, Louie enlisted in the army during WWII and became an airman. With little more than ti

The story of Louie Zamperini who gained fame as an Olympic runner in the 1930s then served in World War II where he was shot down in the Pacific, floated with 2 companions for 47 days in an ill-equipped rescue raft until captured by the Japanese.

It does seem that "we" have learned nothing in the almost 70 years since the atrocities of this war took place for they are still inflicted on victims of war and we still do not take into consideration the trauma experienced by our soldiers.
