This book is the first of a series featuring PI Jackson Brodie--I did read somewhere this is the best in the series so I hope the others still match this one's quality. The series is set in Cambridge, England.
The story revolves around Brodie's investigation of three cold murder cases. The mysteries are involving to the end and are wrapped up well. Atkinson's style of writing reminds me of Amy Bloom. If you've read Amy Bloom, you'll know this is a huge compliment. If you haven't (and with all du ...more

Critics on the other side of the Atlantic love Atkinson; Behind the Scenes at the Museum won the Whitbread Prize. To Americans' delight, Case Histories has made the great leap. The novel is not your typical crime genre fare (that is why we placed it within our literary reviews); it's also a series of family sagas with strong moral frameworks. Atkinson delineates each character with great empathy and depth, revealing his or her motivations, flaws, and healing. She sprinkles her trademark postmode

I initially had a hard time getting into this book because I was not sure where it was headed but I ended up loving it. It has a lot of suspense, mystery, plot and interesting characters.

I read Kate's first novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, for our bookclub selection. This novel was a completely different voice, with some of the same character flaws found in the cast. I enjoyed Case Histories, the sense of place was strong and the characters were very well developed. The flow of the plot was not the novel's strength but I do not feel as though that factor took away from my enjoyment.

I read this for a class - the assignment was read any mystery - first I read - hour game by baldacci and didnt know if that was considered a typical mystery and i didnt like it so i thought i would try this. I have never read any mysteries before but I feel that this wasnt a typical mystery either becasue it seemed more literary instead of a whodunnit like i assumed mysteries would be more like - anyway - i really liked parts of this book, the individual stories of the people's lives, but some o

My initial reaction to the novel was great - I was pulled right in, loved the characters that she created and felt engaged immediately. I love the richness of the characters - the good, the bad and the ugly. I was disappointed in how abruptly the novel ended - things were tied up entirely too easily/quickly for my taste. I just sat there a moment wondering if I'd skipped 100 pages somewhere. But, overall, I liked her writing style and enjoyed the characters that she created. I just wish the end

Gave up on this one in Chapter 5. The case histories at the beginning were interesting, but I got lost track of the story somewhere along the way. Will try this one again later.

While obstensibly a mystery, the enjoyment isn't figuring out whodunit, but rather becoming drawn into the absorbing lives of the grieving family members that are left behind. A true page turner.
