I picked up this book in 2012 at Booktopia Vermont. I bought it for two reasons, 1. wanting to support Northshire Bookstore and 2. I was so lucky to meet the author Madeline Miller at this same event and she is a lovely soft spoke person whose passion for Greek Mythology was so apparent. Normally this is not a book I would read. Even though I loved Greek Mythology in grade school I just didn't think this book would hold my interest. Was I WRONG!!!! I totally loved this book!! Sometimes taking a ...more

I loved it. A slow start, but the writing is so lovely I didn’t mind. When it takes off, it really does. By the halfway point, I couldn’t put it down. I guess not everyone had this experience. 😊

This book had so much potential and I was so excited to read it after hearing so many good things from people that I respect! And its a good book but its not quite the book that I was hoping for ... and expecting. I am giving it a 4 star rating but its really more of a 3 and a half to me.

I love mythology so I was excited to read this book which centers around Achilles and Patroclus. The mythological aspects of the novel were fantastic and engaging. Overall, the book really started strong for me

Really 3 1/2 stars.

A slow beginning, but very gripping toward the end. I liked the idea of Briseis, but I do wish that she had been fleshed out more, especially given the dearth of female characters. The voice was not very distinctive; it was self-consciously arty and sounded very much like a voice I'd heard before. And it made little sense for the viewpoint character. But I liked the story itself very much.

The famous horse warrants only a passing mention because this isn't Odysseus's story (though he does make a rakish side character). Instead this is a beautifully imagined love story between half God Achilles and his soul mate, Patroclus, an exiled prince who is a small character in the Iliad.

Highly recommended for Classics fans.
