I picked up this book in 2012 at Booktopia Vermont. I bought it for two reasons, 1. wanting to support Northshire Bookstore and 2. I was so lucky to meet the author Madeline Miller at this same event and she is a lovely soft spoke person whose passion for Greek Mythology was so apparent. Normally this is not a book I would read. This book had so much potential and I was so excited to read it after hearing so many good things from people that I respect! And its a good book but its not quite the book that I was hoping for ... and expecting. I am giving it a 4 star rating but its really more of a 3 and a half to me.

The famous horse warrants only a passing mention because this isn't Odysseus's story (though he does make a rakish side character). Instead this is a beautifully imagined love story between half God Achilles and his soul mate, Patroclus, an exiled prince who is a small character in the Iliad.
