I'm really struggling with rating this book ... I really liked it in some respects but it was just good in others. I'm going with 4 but I struggled. She is a great writer and the story as a whole was successful. But, there felt like some kind of disconnect in the writing for me. I have been very aware of Louise Erdrich's name, but have never read her before. What took me so long?
This book felt like a story song a la Harry Chapin. It wove a story where parts seemed familiar (refrain) but the parts that moved the story along were new and fresh to be savored, yet gulped. I wanted to know what happened; I wanted it to last forever.

Books about rape are just always hard to read. I liked the perspective of the story from the eyes of Joe, a 13 year-old boy. I enjoyed the tribal legends told. Just didn't love the book, well written as it was.
