What Members Thought

I loved this book about two very different sisters during the WWII German Occupation in France. It's is about their strengths and the lengths they will go to protect the ones they love and what they think is right. It shows that when the men leave the home front to fight how strong the women will become when necessary. Fantastic book.
It also tells of the French Resistance group who helped downed Allied pilots cross the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain for safety. The trail was also used as an esca ...more

3 1/2.
WWII is one of the periods of history I'm most interested in. Even so, I struggled to get in to this book at first. After a few chapters though, I was glad I stuck with it, because it became a fascinating and touching story. This is not just a story about some of the events that happened during the war, but also about the inner strength that exists in all of us, and shows itself when we need it to. It's also a story about family, friendship, love, and holding on to those things against the odds.

I really wanted to love this novel. Although I didn't hate it, I didn't love it either.
For me, it was really hard to get into. I don't think I was hooked until the middle of the novel. I know that it based in the time of war, but I didn't want certain characters to die (ie Herr Captain).
Overall though, the ending of the novel made up for the beginning. I would recommend to those who are history buffs.
