Kizzy Ann Stamps tells the story of a young girl who lives in Lynchburg, VA at the time of integration. The story is told through a series of letters and journal entries to her new teacher at the white school. The story is great for upper elementary students because it showcases the varying responses of both whites and blacks to integration as well as some of the obstacles that arose. I think kids will be able to relate to Kizzy. She is honest about her feelings towards events, and peers. It's also an easy read, being formatted as letters and journal entries. I think this book could inspire kids to write their own stories, track their own experiences. There are some big issues tackled in this one, in a child accessible way, as it's coming from the perspective of someone they can relate to. I definitely will be putting this one in my classroom.
