I really enjoyed this coming of age book set in Mississippi and Tennessee in the 1960s. It tells the story of nine year old Starla who is being raised by her strict grandmother while her father is away working on an oil rig in the gulf. Did not want to read this selection of my f2f book group- not my time period, not my topic. Struggled through the first half but eventually things began to click. A lot of bad things continue to happen but at least I began to relax a little. Came to care about several of the characters. In the end I liked it. Go figure.
