Wonderful! Throughout most of the book I kept feeling a strong 4 stars but as it neared the end I realized how invested I became with the characters and the emotions I felt as the end neared were powerful. Brooks is an extremely talented writer. Her writing feels what I imagine it felt like at the time, so what I imagine the voices sounded like, so authentic. Greatly enjoyed the retelling with some creative liberties of the interactions of the native people of Massachusetts with the English. A bittersweet story of courage, hope, and renewal of faith. Thoroughly enjoyed and now hope to read accounts by Bradstreet & Hutchinson to further my knowledge of 17th C. Puritan women.

This was better than OK but I did not like the ending nor the jump from narrator's girlhood to end of her life. I suppose what happened was realistic but I'd have much preferred a different outcome. Reader annoyed me at first by pronouncing "a" as ay all the time instead of uh but I either got used to it or she eventually stopped doing it as much.
