One of my favorite all time books is The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. In this book Will and his mother share with us upward of 120 books that they love.

One of these books is The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett.

From Will's words we learn:

The book was set in London. It even involved the Queen of England. But what really captured Mom was the cast of supporting characters: especially the young page, a “ginger-haired boy in overalls,” who gets the queen to start reading, and Sir Claud

I enjoyed the novella immensely. Bennett breathed humanity into Queen Elizabeth II who is frequently portrayed as stuffy. I loved her as a reader, a doer, and a passionate soul that longs to connect with others through intelligent dialogue. Great story & I definitely will add Proust to my reading list.
Book Concierge
Bennett also wrote the play "The History Boys" and again focuses on gay issues. This novella is a different approach, however, and has a nice little twist at the end. There are some real tidbits to think over. Still, it's VERY English in its dry humor. ...more
