This is a very different book from "Girl with a Pearl Earring."
This book takes place in London from 1901-1910, following the lives of two families, the COlemans and the Waterhouses. We hear numerous voices here too - adults, children, scullery maid, grave digger, doyene. Chevalier's gift here is making us care about these various people - especially Maude - who grows physically, emotionally and intellectually through the timespan of the book. ...more

"1901, the year of the Queen's death. The two graves stood next to each other, both beautifully decorated. One had a large urn -- some might say ridiculously large -- and the other, almost leaning over the first, an angel -- some might say overly sentimental.
