In what she calls a “true life novel,” Walls turns her attention to her maternal grandmother: Lily Casey Smith. Not having the specifics of dialogue and thought, Walls felt it was not appropriate to call this nonfiction, yet it truly is her grandmother’s story.
Walls is a wonderful storyteller; she really brings Lily and all the other characters to life. And what a life!

The book was fairly well written. The interesting storyline was about the American West and the hardships endured during the early 20th century. The reason I'm giving the book 3 stars is because I thought the main character was very unlikeable and her narrative was a bit over the top, quite unbelievable in fact. Perhaps not fair to give a book lower stars because of distain towards a character, but if I find a character truly unlikeable to the extent that it makes the story unbearable, I lower t
