DNF-- the characters did not resonate with me. If I were to compare Underground Railroad to Homegoing, I thought the latter to be the better book this year. Underground Railroad was tough to get into and perhaps if more action had occurred in the first part of the book, I would have liked it more.

The Underground Railroad is a work of alternate historical fiction and therein lies the rub. I like accurate historical fiction, or so I think. In this book I am not sure if what I am reading is true or made-up.
But for this book, I have decided to go against the grain. Whitehead has crafted an ingenious story here and for that I say Bravo. Quit worrying about fact or fiction, Celia, and enjoy the book.

Cora is a slave on a Georgia plantation in the early to mid 1800s. Her mother disappeared some time back and now she casts her lot with Caesar to run away. Caesar knows where there is a “station master” for the Underground Railroad, if they can only get there.

I was already interested in reading this book, but when I attended an event (Vancouver Writer's Festival) with this author, I needed to read this novel. I even bought the hardcover (though on sale and I had a coupon, but still!) for the author to sign. Yet, the "curse of the bought book" struck so the book sat on my shelf while I read through my library pile and ARCs. I used my book club for motivation, but I did not finish this in time for my book club meeting. ...more

This was an infuriating, heart wrenching, and beautiful story. Cora's journey and experiences, to and from freedom, were unimaginable yet what is even more shocking is the awareness of how much these attitudes, actions, and atrocities are a factual part of American History. The Underground Railroad was very well written and thought provoking; a good read. I never tire of reading about the angst and harsh realities of the slavery experience - human stories of survival and of resilience.
