I'm a fan of these behind the scene views of women by the author. This is my second book by her, my first being The Other Einstein. Of the two I've read, I feel like the author takes us into the lives of these women who were so influential (or could have been given the chance) and allows the reader to get a glimpse of them and all their strengths. I had heard of Hedy Lamarr but knew so little about her since she's from a bygone era but what I didn't know was that she was quite brilliant. I feel

I love old Hollywood so have been aware of Hedy Lamarr for a long time, but didn't know she was such a fascinating woman. Just before I read this novel, I watched a documentary on Lamarr specifically touching on her scientific background. I was so excited to see there was going to be a fictionalized biography coming out by an author that blew me away with The Other Einstein. However, I found the novel so slow that I put it down a lot. Hedy Lamarr was a movie star in the 1930s-50s, known for her ethereal beauty. She was also a highly intelligent, self-taught scientist and inventor. In this novel, Benedict tries to shed more light on the hidden aspects of Lamarr’s life, particularly her scientific inventions that led to advances in technology that we use today.

Hedy Lamarr’s ( Hedwig Kiesler) life was unreal. From being born of Jewish parents and living in Austria during Hitler’s reign to making a risqué soft porn movie to marrying a munitions factory owner who ended up in league with the Nazi’s to drugging a maid to escape from the marriage to inventing a frequency device that prevents torpedo’s from hitting their mark. You think what else can there be. Well, there is and it’s in this book. Interesting reading to say the least.

Pros- I never knew anything about Hedy, so this was a good intro to her.
I appreciate very much what the author said in her author's note about the marginalization of the contributions of women throughout history. For that alone and for her taking on Hedy as a subject, I give her props.
Cons- The novel was choppy. I didn't like how she jumped in time between chapters... 1 month between these two, 9 months between those two, etc. I had to keep flipping back to see when the last chapter took place ...more

I read this book in order to participate in the monthly, Barnes and Noble's book club discussion. I had read Benedict's former book, The Other Einstein, and really enjoyed it as well. The Only Woman in the Room was interesting yet I felt Benedict spent too much time on leading up to Hedy Lamarr's true, scientific contributions leaving this big, wondrous revelation to only the last 50 pages or so of the book. I have never heard of Hedy Lamarr, who I now understand to have been a very well known a
