“And Olive thought about this: the way people can love those they barely know, and how abiding that love can be, and also how deep that love can be… All love was to be taken seriously.”

Dammit, Elizabeth Strout! You did it, again! You have a beautiful soul. Oh, you truly do! It’s books like this, about Olive Kitteridge and Lucy Burton and Bob Burgess, and all those people in their orbit, that ruin real life for me just a little bit. Not because your characters are going on grand adventures and I’

Olive mellows a bit in her older age. In her later, wiser years develops a better relationship with her son and his kids. She is still the same opinionated Olive that people either love or hate, I’m in the love category. Strout has done an impeccable job in following up on this unforgettable character, complete with the exquisite descriptions of Crosby, Maine. There are even some cameo appearances from other characters within the book, which just adds to its charm and quirkiness.

Strout returns to the character featured in her Pulitzer-Prize-winning Olive Kitteridge . Olive still lives in Cosby, Maine, still has a strained relationship with her son, still is remarkably clueless about how her abrupt manner affects others, and yet…

The book is character-driv

Olive Kitteridge is back, and she is just as fascinating as she was in the previous novel. We have some new characters and some familiar ones. As the previous novel, this another great example of a writer who can make character studies so interesting. I would recommend reading Olive Kitteridge first, as it may not make as much sense being read on it's own. Reading this first would also take away from the character development between books.

For me this is a 3 star book, which means I liked it. I give Olive, the character, 4 or maybe even 5 stars because I REALLY like her; but the overall book is a 3 for me.

I like Olive because she speaks her mind telling it like she sees it. How can you get mad at a person who tells you exactly what they think about a situation whether you like it or not? I don’t always agree with her and can’t imagine that she’d be offended by that. I see Olive as very much human in a good way and in a bad way.
