After enjoying Moloka’i very much, I decided to read Ruth’s story. Ruth was Rachel Utagawa’s daughter. Rachael was a very young child when she was shipped off to The island of Molaka’i. Rachel spent most of her time quarantined at the settlement at Kalaupapa. When Ruth was born Rachel had to give her up she was not allowed to keep her beautiful daughter. Rachel and Ruth’s father who was Japanese where heartbroken. Every year on Ruth’s birthday they wrapped a special gift for her.

3.5 Rounding up to 4 from 3.5 stars. While I found this story to be very informative of events that occurred in the United States during WW2, the writing just seemed different and less emotionally engaging as compared to the author's other books that I loved immensely. I'm not sure if this is a result of my own mind as there are many things happening in my life right now to distract me but I know I loved his books Moloka'i and Palisades Park and this one just did not engage me in quite the same

I have read the first book in the series Moloka'i and this book is a more than worthy successor.
It is about Ruth, the daughter that Rachel Kalama was forced to give up at birth.
"Daughter of Moloka’i opens on a stormy night in 1917 when Sister Louisa opens the door to find a rain-soaked Sister Catherine clutching little Ruth. Ruth grows into a rebellious and sad little girl who loves animals and doesn’t understand why, one by one, the other girls are adopted, but she is disappointed when prospect ...more

What a fabulous follow-up to Moloka'i and Rachel's story. As the title suggests, this novel looks at Ruth's story from her birth. If you enjoyed the first book, you will love this one as it gives us Ruth's point of view and her hardships. We see Ruth's struggles and lonliness in the Home for Girls, to finding her forever family with a Japanese family. She is half Hawaiian and half Japanese and feels like she does not fully fit in anywhere. Brennert lets the ...more

It was really great to complete the story of Rachel, with this sequel to Moloka'i. I never knew (or forgotten about( Japanese Internment Camps, so I was glad to learn about that, how difficult it is to think that sort of stuff happened on US soil. I am thankful we got updates on Catherine too (in case you were wondering about that from the first one). It was really great to finish the family story.

I loved reading this one (not quite as much as the first novel Moloka'i) but it was beautifully written and I cried a few times in the story. The internment camps were awful and reading about the conditions was heartbreaking. The relationships between mother(s) and daughter were well done and I enjoyed seeing the growth in Ruth, Rachel and Etsuko. Such a lovely story and I'm glad I read it back to back with the first novel.
