YA fantasy has gotten less popular in recent times. The tropes, the heavy focus on romantic relationships and the superficial treatment of serious topics are major critiques over the years. Ironic, given that the main thrust was often to feature girls as being strong leaders worthy of taking the spotlight. In this series, Alina is meant to the middle ground, the flawed leader who attempts to navigate power structures. She has no desire to imitate the Darkling or the Lanstov monarchy. I enjoyed this one better than the first book, but honestly, it was still kind of average for me. I listened to it on audiobook which I much preferred than reading the physical book. I will continue onto the last book of the series just to find out what happens.

Pretty average this time around?? A little disappointed this time around, not gonna lie. Hated the cult-like aspects included, but loved the action oriented parts of the story.

Move over Celia St. James, Mal Oretsev is taking over as number one unlikable character of the year. Seriously, I don't know what it is about this dude but I literally can't stand him sometimes. Do better Alina!
