This book was wonderful, a slow creeping feeling of fear that doesn't let up until the last page. I see now why Hitchcock produced movies based on Du Maurier's stories.

It was more interesting than I thought it would be, but not really something I will ever pick up again. A little depressing and weird, but definitely a page-turner. I was able to read it in one sitting. Very vivid descriptions--I felt like I really was there along with the characters. Not as creepy and gothic as I had imagined. No actual ghosts or anything. This is not a bad thing, just surprised me. My favorite character was Jasper--the only normal one in the book.

Such a melancholy, anxiety-provoking book. What to read when you've read Wuthering Heights to your heart's desire and still long for more gloomy English atmosphere and characters making their lives miserable through their own stupidity. The story is captivating though (although to me the ending is like the author was late for a deadline and so hurried and shipped the thing off without filling it out).
