Captain Blood, scourge of the high seas!

Maybe 3.75 stars? This is a tough one for me to rate.
Peter Blood is an Irish physician living in England in the late 1600s. When the Duke of Monmouth rebels against King James, Blood wants nothing to do with the rebellion, but when he treats some of the rebels for their injuries and is caught by the king's men, he's sentenced to be hanged by the infamous judge, Judge Jeffries. His death sentence is commuted to a sentence of slavery in the sugar cane plant ...more

Read this with the Retro Reads group - I was promised an adventurous, escapist read, especially appealing in these uncertain times of pandemic, and it certainly delivered.
Irishman Peter Blood, as the book opens, is a former soldier, now doctor, in an English village during the reign of King James. He stays out of politics, but is caught up in a rebellion while treating a wounded local aristocrat. In a sham trial, he is convicted and transported to the Caribbean, where he is sold into brutal sla ...more

I flipping loved it. One of the best adventure novels, I've read yet. Let me repeat, I loved it. It was exciting, romantic, and had sea battles I could follow despite have zero to do with the ocean stuff and boats ever. Oh, and I flipping love it.
