DNF at 18%.
The book is beautiful, I have already read it in Italian a few months ago. However, Flaubert's French is too difficult for me, even if I was reading the ebook and listening to the audiobook at the same time. I knew the story already, so I could follow what was happening, but I couldn't understand way too many words. This was an exercise in French, and it's failed miserably. What is strange is that when I read a book by Zola a few years back, I was able to understand his French without ...more

I'm glad to have read Madam Bovary but it sure wasn't a feel good story at any point, and I am sure Flaubert had no intention if it being so. What stood out the most for me was the extreme contrast of characters and how their flaws affected one another. The ever sufferring coniving narccisist, the naive, needy, insecure mama's boy, the agnostic chemist vs. the the man of defiant religious faith, the immature romantic lover and the seasoned Lothario.
