This was the most simple, gloomy, in-your-face and depressing first chapter of any book I have ever read. Congrats, Mr. Mankell, now let's move on.

I really enjoyed this crime /international conspiracy thriller despite of a couple of "convenient accidents" Mankell uses to get his story going. I don't expect my crime fiction to be 100% realistic or plausible, or else I'd read the newspapers. There is something about Wallander that just has you rooting for him - is it because he is such an anti-hero, or is it due to Mankell's way with words that makes him so real and believable? Another strong book in the series - I didn't like it quite as much as The Dogs of Riga, but the African angle was interesting. It seems like every Swedish author I read likes to include social commentary... well worth the read.

Again between three and four stars but because I like Wallander I'm gonna rate it four!
At times the conspiracy felt exaggerated but in a mysterious way I was drawn into this book way more than the previous (Dogs of Riga) hence the 4-star rating i/o three.
Very much enjoyed Wallander's father and daughter presence as well. ...more
