[close] Interview with the Vampire is a book most of us have read as young girls, handed down by the matriarchs before us. It's a Halloween staple and personally, one of my favorite books. Just short of 350 pages, it should take us 4 weeks maximum.

I was a young girl, just entering my teens, when my mother first handed me Interview With The Vampire. It seemed to me like a right of passage, like my mother was handing me the baton of womanhood by thinking of me as a person she whom she could recommend books. I devoured the story and immediately read the next four books in the series before Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man And The Sea found its way into my bookshelf. I was a young girl, just entering my teens, when my mother first handed me Interview With The Vampire. It seemed to me like a right of passage, like my mother was handing me the baton of womanhood by thinking of me as a person she whom she could recommend books. I devoured the story and immediately read the next four books in the series before Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man And The Sea found its way into my bookshelf. Back then, I viewed Anne Rice as a modern day bard, an exceptional storyteller who brought me right into the world of 1800’s New Orleans but a reread of the story, a decade later, makes me rethink my juvenile book choices. The story begins with a vampire by the name of Louis Point du Lac who is telling his story, in a very confusing manner (come on, Anne! Are all the quotation marks necessary?), to a frightened reporter. The man who made Louis into what he views as a ‘child of Satan’ is Lestat, a modern day rockstar trapped in the body of a bloodsucking killing machine who does what he pleases. Louis is trying to hang onto the morals he can’t quite shake in spite of Lestat’s mockery but before he can make his escape, Lestat gives him a vampire anchor baby- a young child turned murderer who he names Claudia. Interview With The Vampire is truly timeless and will forever tower over the imposters, putting “books” like Twilight to shame. It raises fascinating questions of nature vs nurture, questions on the meaning of love and of survival-- if you can ignore the countless and spelling mistakes, missing words and completely disorienting punctuation. (Seriously, those quotation marks??) Interview With The Vampire gives you a wonderful and well-thought out story paired with a lack of character development (for anyone but the two main characters) and such flowery language that it can be easy to miss big events in the story, forcing you to take a step back to catch the climax. Anne Rice writes one hell of a story but please, can someone get this woman an editor?

8/10: I loved the book and fell in love with Louis and Claudia. I wish Anne Rice all the best of luck with Prince Lestat coming out in 2014. ...more
