I found reading "The Great Gatzby" enticingly readable and amazing due to Scott Fitzgerald's brilliant writing. In fact, some 40 years ago I usually came across this book on the shelves in nearly all of those good bookstores in Bangkok but I didn't know why I decided not to read it at all. This book has everything; avarice, gluttony, wrath, pride, list, sloth, but most of all... envy. I'd always thought that the American dream was driven by greed, but Fitzgerald makes a strong argument that envy is the trump card. Every sin is committed out of envy. I should expect this to be mandatory reading for every American schoolkid if America is to maintain the values it currently spreads around the world. I suppose I've failed to find the virtue in this American classic.
