I accidentally took this off my shelf, because I was only reading this while I was away in London to see Bhad Bhabie.

I may properly read it again one day, but this is my last review of it:

It's been a really long time since I read The Hunger Games, the last time being 2014 (according to my Goodreads stats). It was nice to pick up a book that I've largely forgotten all detail of and start again. That sounds like a dig at the story and author, but it's just because I've not read it as nearly enou I accidentally took this off my shelf, because I was only reading this while I was away in London to see Bhad Bhabie.

It's been a really long time since I read The Hunger Games, the last time being 2014 (according to my Goodreads stats). It was nice to pick up a book that I've largely forgotten all detail of and start again. That sounds like a dig at the story and author, but it's just because I've not read it as nearly enough times as I have other series and novels, and that doesn't really mean anything.

Back then, I rated it a 5 stars, but this time I'm dropping it down to a solid 4 stars because I give out stars generously and I really shouldn't.

Some people may disagree, but I don't think the majority of the characters are as flat and as 2D as some people make them out to be. Characters like Peeta, Haymitch, Cinna and Gale are very distinct and this never changes. You have likeable characters, unlikeable characters (like Katniss, actually) and ones who simply don't get enough monologue for us to see what they're like; mainly the prep team. There's a small group of them and they all seem to have the same Capitol type personality. As for favourites, Cinna is by far my favourite, and Peeta is catching up.

As for the main character, Katniss is a good protagonist. She doesn't care about her looks, and she cares about what matters; family, her friends, and providing for them. She's also skilful, resourceful and overall knows how to survive. It's also nice that the lead is a female, because it would have been so easy to write a male character into this and make him all about achieving, killing and murder (basically, first person POV of a male Career). She doesn't depend on men, even though both Gale and Peeta are a bit part in her life, she doesn't need them. Gale is her hunting partner, and now, at the end of the book, Peeta understands what she's been through.

The plot as a whole is one of my favourite things about the novel and its series. The way it unfolds, the actions and events that take place, you could list all the important moments of the Games itself. Much like when Katniss volunteers for her sister, she sings the song for Rue and the berries. You think it's going to end on a positive note, but there's really nothing positive about coming home from an arena where you've watched other teenagers murder each other for weeks. Despite this book being about a dystopian future where something like the Hunger Games exist, Collins tries to keep keep it as 'real' as possible. Katniss has rational thoughts, natural fears, she simply believes she's just a girl and isn't someone "special". Long before the word "rebellion" crops up, there's a hint of it there already. From the moment Madge gives her the mockingjay pin, the intention is there and is almost clear. I like how the whole love theme is minor, but still plays an important role in the book. Without it, Katniss and Peeta would not have gotten as far as they would have.

One thing I noticed, that I don't think I noticed before, is how incredibly simplistic the writing is. Simple sentences with simple words, punctuation and grammar. I like simplicity to a certain point, but when I feel like I'm reading a novel for aged 11 and under, it loses more than it gains. "Abby you must be desperate!" , yup that is what my mom said when I picked up the Hunger Games book at the library. Maybe I was. But I am sure glad I tried it!

Nice book. I loved the last scene... it was just beyond words. The book is beyond words. Suzanne Collins Hunger Games trilogy deserves all the attention it gets. The only thing I did not like about this book was the Peeta thing. It was confusing- so what if they arent in love? I thought Suzanne could have done a better job than that. Every year, Panem must face the Hunger Games; each district must offer up one boy and one girl, making 24 in all, to fight to the death on television. Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place... and enters the fight of her life.

This book was ok. I got bored a few times, but was mostly pulled into the story. The way that the author described characters and setting was really good, and I found it easy to understand what the author was trying to convey.
