This is the final installment of the "Helen Trilogy" that began with Fever Dream as the first story, followed by Cold Vengeance. Being an avid lover of Agent Pendergast, I loved this book! Mind you, there were some detours into other storylines, which I have actually enjoyed. The side stories have nothing to do with Agent Pendergast or his journey, but it gave you a little break from the heavy duty stuff that's going on with him. That said, I enjoyed the book immensely. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but it was somewhat nostalgic. It was clearly the end the “Helen trilogy” and in many ways it appears to be the end of the Pendergast series. The book seemed to be a grand tour de force and mentioned almost every major character in the Preston/Child universe. Of couple of the plot threads didn’t seem to have so much tied to the major theme as a way to reminisce with some of the former characters. Almost all of the plot threads hav ...more

I sort of called a number of the plot devices early on, but the story was great. I will admit,I was sad at the end. Mostly because it felt as if Pendergast was cutting himself from the world, much like his great grand-uncle. Not that I feel any particular way towards Viola. Watching Pendergast's decent into utter desolation was heartbreaking, but the saddest part was that it seems he may never recover. BUT, since the story has been set up for more encounters with Alban,we shall see.
