I thoroughly enjoyed this book. First, I loved the ending. Without giving it away, what happened was what should have happened. Matheson didn't change anything to make it more palatable for anybody. Second, I loved the bait-and-switch he pulls with the horror of the book. I picked it up, looking to be scared of vampires; I put it down scared of something totally different, more visceral, and, really, more applicable to my life. I wasn't that impressed with this read unfortunately. I was inspired to pick it up after seeing the Will Smith version in theaters and was excited at the prospect that it was very different from the movie. I read this on a plane ride from San Farncisco to New York and wished that I had something else to occupy my time. The writing style didn't grab me, I felt no connection to the characters. I will put this one up there with the best vampire novels I have read...I really enjoyed this one.I read it straight through from start to finish...couldnt put it down.Somehow I doubt that the movie will follow the storyline though...just from watching the previews it seems very unlikely.We will see.
