I liked the way it alternated from different points of view. Amy Tan found views that compared and contrasted uniquely. The first chapter sets up the four older women as having been friends but I fail to see that connection throughout the rest of the novel only but lightly. Lindo Jong and Ying Ying St.Clair's stories compared too easily that I had strong problems remembering which was which. So I really didn't think I would like this book - let's face it, chick lit is just not my thing. But I have to admit, it really got to me. I mean, REALLY got to me. I cried and everything! I think part of it was that I really like Amy Tan's writing style, not to mention that her stories can be absolutely heartbreaking, but in a way that is, somehow, not too depressing.
