I have been meaning to read this book for a long time and picked it for my 7 Classics in 2009 challenge. I enjoyed the story, especially as I reminded myself that I was not reading "historical fiction" but a book that was contemporarily written in the 1800s. The language is graceful and the characters are fascinating when looked at through 21st century eyes.
