Everybody says this is a brilliant book and that the movie doesn't hold a candle to it. I loved the movie, so I thought I'd love the book. I didn't. I got 176 pages in and I just couldn't handle the effect it had on me. I think it was Aristotle or Sophocles who first noticed that comic relief was necessary. This book has no comic relief, just page after page of right-on-the-nose satire of American society. I can dig it for 10 or 20 pages, but after 176 pages . . . I gave up. I read books for ent
