Novel length version of Who's On First... This book took me an eternity to finish. It was funny and very smart but I'm a very character driven reader and I didn't even like Yossarian until the last 1/4 of the book. I'm glad I finished but definitely not my cup of tea.

Yossarian is a WW2 squadron bomber in a US Army Base located in a small island in the coast of Italy, who is just done with flying. When he began, he was told he'd have to fly 35 missions; however, every time he or any of his mates are close to that number, a colonel raises them again (it's 80 by the end). He thinks his time is close, and why should he bomb total strangers who are themselves trying to shoot at him, anyway?

Started at a 1 for me and I considered quitting. Moved up to a 2, and I decided to tough it out. But by the end of the book, I liked how the random, stray, confusing parts came together, and I finished it in an attitude of wanting to know the end.
Not a chronological book, and full of "inside joke" moments that get explained by the end. So it starts crazy confusing, but eventually makes some sense. Monty Python like humor. ...more

Great classic read that truly parodies the foolishness and insanity of bureaucracy and the people in charge vis a vis the military. A “Catch 22” is something we all deal with almost on a daily basis - a never ending loop of illogical thought processes. Also this book shows the value of life and living amidst certain death - war, in this case. Funny, sad, terrifying and at times annoying, but overall a enjoyable read.

Brilliant!
Clever.Visual.Hilarious.Innovative.
War is not one of my favorite genres. But this book is much more than that. I can see why this is seen as the foundation for all war lampoons. But, it's also just exceptional satire despite topic. It's comprehensive and tight at the same time. ...more
