Fascinating exploration of the discovery and history of the source of the colors used by artists and dyers. This book is dense with mythology, folktales, science, botany, geology and geography, politics, and economics -- all of which underlie the subject of pigments and dyes and the colors they offer.

The author is also a well-traveled journalist, so we are treated to an extensive travelogue as well, as she searches all over the world for different color sources. If I have one complaint about th ...more
