The real question behind this novel is: Will they actually get to the fucking lighthouse or not?
I have a strange relationship with Virginia Woolf, as I imagine many readers do. I am not an expert on Woolf and I haven't read everything by her yet. As with any author, some books are better than others. I'm in the minority, I think, with my love for The Waves and found Mrs. Dalloway (regardless of their connection) a disappointment to read later. I keep waiting to be touched as deeply as I was when ...more

I give Woolf's writing 5 stars, but the lack of plot 3 stars, which leads to my 4-star rating.
I enjoyed the second part of the book about how a house feels once abandoned. This part of the book really resonated with me because when a house is unlived in, I can visually see how it looks unloved and can almost hear it saying "buy me, buy me". As for the rest of the book, I get what Woolf was trying to do here. It just didn't really interest me very much. I'll stick with finishing Proust's 7 volum ...more

This was an "aha moment" book for me. I had to give it my undivided attention in order to follow the abruptly fracturing threads of time and shifting points of view. If my attention wandered for a minute, I'd have to flip back and reread an entire page. The experience was like standing with my nose an inch away from a pointillism painting. At first all you perceive vivid dots of various colors, and very slowly as you read the painting recedes. Suddenly, a picture appears, a form out of chaos. Bu

Mrs Ramsay tells her son James they will visit the lighthouse the next day, but in fact the trip does not happen until 10 years later. The novel examines the thoughts and feelings of the Ramsay family and their holiday guests, at the original gathering and again at the reunion, as they examine events and their memories of them.

It took about 50 pages or so to get into this book. Initially, I had to reread certain paragraphs to make sure that I had understood what I just read. Woolf switches back and forth between many points of view, but she crafts her work so masterfully that it all works. After that first 50 pages, everything began to flow and I read compulsively.
