Wow! What a disappointment. WWII has never been such a boring background to a story.
This book spent so much time with the main characters that is almost shut out what was happening around them. The main character is petty, jealous and dislikable and that was really hard to get around as he told this story. The crux of this plot is a despicable act that was committed for such a petty, selfish reason that it borders on nonsensical.
Then the story ends.

I had a very hard time getting into this book. I tried 3 or 4 times, and I just couldn’t get past the first chapters. I am glad though that I insisted and returned to it. There is so much here: art, friendship, love, betrayal, jealousy… all against the background of WWII. After fighting so hard to read it, this book grew on me, and has not let me go. I finished it 4 days ago, and I am still thinking about it: how one single action can change people’s story – or can it? And how do we live with th ...more

The story itself is ok, I think it had a lot more potential than it was. I could not particularly relate to any of the characters, and I found them to be somewhat flat. The time period, the subject matter, and the choices facing each of the characters could have led to much more internal conflicts than what I got out of the story.
