I didn't expect to like this because I'd heard James Wood worshipped realism and disliked experimental fiction but jeez what a thin way to characterize his thinking, because this little expository essay was really quite extraordinary, packing a lot of insight into tiny spaces, and making me think a great deal about why I love some fiction, and why I find other works mindlessly tedious.
