The Odyssey is, well, the Odyssey. Beyond being a tremendously exciting read, it is a foundational work in Western literature.
It is a glorious story of love and war, gods and humans, adventure in and around the Mediterranean (and, some argue, out to the West Indies). On the surface simply the story of Odysseus's adventures after the fall of Troy, it is a rich tapestry of places, characters, and creatures which have entered into the basic language of Western literature.

Epic and wonderful. I don't know what I can add to what has already been said many times about this story. It has everything: adventure, deception, murder, conspiracy, interference/help of the gods. It's a totally great story.
I really liked Lattimore's version. It's clear and the writing flows smoothly and beautifully.
This book is a keeper and will be read again one day. ...more

Favorite lines:
"If only that Odysseus sported with these suitors,
a blood wedding, a quick death would take the lot!"
