This is a notable Victorian sensation novel, full of delicious malevolence and scheming. Lady Audley is the former governess Lucy Graham, brought to a life of wealth and ease by her doting older husband Sir Michael. Sir Michael’s nephew Robert comes to Audley Court to meet his new aunt, accompanied by his friend George Tallboys, but notices that Lady Audley seems to be avoiding them. Not everything that happened in this book may have been the most realistic thing in the world, but it was fun to read. Much more fun that the Victorian book I am reading now, Agnes Grey, which is putting me to sleep.
