This is my first Highsmith and for the first half I wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. I figured 3 stars at best, it seemed so lacking in pace or thrills. But as the book went on, I was slowly drawn in by the rising claustrophobia and sense of anxious dread and by the last third, just couldn't put it down. Highsmith's skill here seems to be in making it seem very reasonable for the reader to be quietly rooting for the sociopath not to be found out - I mean, after all he is a doting father ...more
