Tense novel set in WWII London, and ostensibly centring on a love triangle between widow Stella Rodney, her lover Robert, and the mysterious Harrison who tells Stella that Robert is a German spy and offers to withhold this information if Stella becomes his lover. Meanwhile, a working class girl called Louie whose husband is fighting abroad finds herself drawn into contact with Harrison and Stella.
