I read this because my friend had a copy and a lot of times I'm like "Oh, can I borrow that?" no matter what it is because I want to read everything. (Almost.)
I'm one of the few people who didn't love Gone Girl, and found issues with it that a lot of people overlooked. It doesn't mean that I'm right and they're wrong (or vice versa), but just that for me these issues were bigger problems. Now that I've read Sharp objects, I think that is going to be my experience with Gillian Flynn.

I debated between a rating of 2 or 3 stars. Opted for 2 because, in general, I found the book slow moving. For all the creepy characters and awful acts, this story didn't pull me in very much, despite that I was interested in seeing how it ended.
Camille was such a damaged, hurt person. I found her compelling in many ways. Her self-destructive actions had me concerned for her safety a few times.
This is a hard book to review without giving away key elements that should remain hidden, so this rev ...more

Is Gillian Flynn the modern day Muriel Spark? Vicious is the word that comes to mind for both authors, but also delicious.
Flynn's also becoming one of my favorite first person narrative writers (something I don't think Spark did much of?) Being in the head of her narrators should be a truly depressing experience, but she somehow makes it fun. ...more

I was not enthralled. The author has a more recent book that has received a lot of attention so I thought I'd try this one. Perhaps because I watch too much television, I was able to "solve" the puzzle very quickly. It seemed quite trite to me but I think that a lot of people might be fascinated. I forgot the name of the main character almost instantly. I would classify this as a book that would be great escapist reading and / or a book that might be listened to on tape while you are driving or

Psycho moms and mean girls.
2.5 stars.
2.5 stars.

Not as good as her other two (Dark Places is the best), but still dark, twisty, and just what I needed.

I listened to this on audio, and really enjoyed this thriller/mystery.
The author did a really good job of slowly unravelling the suspects and their complex personalities to give enough for the reader to evaluate possible suspects without giving it away, or making it an our of left field resolution.
I enjoyed this more that Gone Girl, and think it would make a better movie.

It is hard for me to separate the book from the excellent limited series which I watched before reading. I think the performances probably added a level of gravitas where some of the characters as written could have veered into camp if I read the book first. However, I liked this book so much more than Gone Girl. I enjoyed the dark delve into female adolescence and how trauma echoes through generations. I also felt that Flynn did a good job of capturing small town Southern life in an authentic w

Gillian Flynn specializes in seriously damaged humans. This is her first novel and quite good. Be prepared to read the last 100-150 pages in one sitting.
The Goodreads description is accurate but misleading.
I will re-read the book now that I know the ending.
