Wow, this book is so topical! I didn't intend it to fit a theme, but it fits right in to the #metoo movement. In the first few pages, I was worried that the book was self-consciously experimental in form, but in fact it ended up working for me. I wasn't specifically aware of the Chappaquiddick incident, in which Senator Ted Kennedy drove a car with young Mary Jo Kopechne off a bridge and tried to cover it up, before I read this book. I say "specifically", because even though I didn't know about the actual people or events, it feels like I know the story. It feels like an American myth or parable. I really want to like this book. I really do. The first few chapters of Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates were just incredible. I was blown away by her sleek, stylish and poetic writing style that seemed to rush off the pages in dark ink. As it progressed, I started to feel a little bit like I was going insane.
