This is a wonderfully written novel with a haunting atmosphere set in the Sudan in the mid-20th century. The narrator has returned to his home village from being educated in England. A stranger has settled in the village, a man, like himself, who was also educated in England. This stranger is soon dead, leaving the narrator with guardianship over his wife and sons, with the key to a mysterious room and with his story of sexual conquest in England that ends in each woman’s death.
