4.5 stars. This is exactly the way I like my science fiction - a character-driven, propulsive story in a fascinating world. No awkward, ham-handed descriptions of technology to jolt me out of the story, and yet I felt like I understood the science completely. I loved seeing this world through the eyes of the narrator/protagonist, Ren. This novel continuously delighted me. There was something about the rhythm and scene setting in the beginning that needed getting used to, where I thought characters behaved in unrealistic ways, but I kept going because I loved the narrative voice. Eventually I loved everything about it, especially the way the story altered direction more than once, and in ever more surprising ways.

The first 260 pages are very engaging. I enjoy the fantastic bioengineering and imaginative alien biology. Is the God's city a plant, an animal, or something else? The story is well-written and the main character is nicely drawn. Yet, I am disappointed by the progression of the story, which turns from a space exploration to a psychological horror, and ends as a philosophical fable.
