This book takes place in modern Egypt and is a snapshot into the lives of a variety of residents of The Yacoubian building which include well off residents in the main part of the building, and poor residents in the converted storage sheds of the roof. It looks at the challenges presented to the expectations of class, religion, and gender in this society, and provides the reader with a look at society not seen through the western news coverage.
