What Members Thought

I loved this book. As far as what I consider to be "perfect" books, this one ranks pretty high up there. Daniel, the narrator, is a member of the Beef Stew Club, a gentleman's club of 10 members who dine together once a month. When one of the members dies of AIDS, Daniel meets Lucido in a wine shop who fills the deceased's place; in addition Lucido insists on cooking each of the meals, preferring to serve each man's favorite meal once. A great parable, with clear political undertones (which went over my head, as I have virtually no knowledge of Brazilian politics / culture). It is also enjoyable as a straight up story about greed, gluttony, grief, revenge - and of course, the pleasures of food. I really enjoy the writer's style and hope to find other of his works in translation.
