Powerful and compelling account of the bloody end of Trujillo's dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. As you might expect, this does not make for easy reading and the scenes of violence and terror after Trujillo's assassination were particularly upsetting. After reading and loving Llosa's War of the End of the World, I was excited to read his take on Trujillo's Dominican Republic, but I was somewhat disappointed. The book takes a long time to build up to Trujillo's assasignation (do historical events count as spoilers?), and I found the first part of the book dry and slow.
