This is a cute little book, which, in the tradition of what little I've seen of South American fiction, meanders around a great deal. To say it concerns itself with its so-called principal characters would be something of an exaggeration - unless, of course, one assumes that these said characters are in fact the town and the region.

Loved loved LOVED this. For some reason I didn't expect to, which only added to the enjoyment.
Nacib and Gabriela, the nominal main characters, are surrounded by a full group cast of 30+ characters whose stories intertwine with so much life, so much local color and language, that you're halfway through the book before you realize this all serves to portrait the end of an era.
Nacib and Gabriela's tale, but also everyone else's storylines, all strive to paint a whole landscape that acts as a meta ...more
