I have about a decade's experience of working in the medical field - the first couple working on a patient floor in a hospital as a unit clerk putting in orders so inpatients could get the tests they needed, calling codes and doctors during emergencies, that sort of thing. Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder

This is an outstanding read, not for the writing which is journalistic in style, but for the subject. Paul Farmer is a Harvard educated, world renowned infectious disease specialist with a PhD in medical anthropology along with his MD.
