He slapped her hard. Salander opened her eyes wide, but before she could react, he grabbed her by the shoulder and threw her on to the bed. The violence caught her by surprise. When she tried to turn over, he pressed her down on the bed and straddled her.

That's just to give you a little taste of what one is dealing with by picking up this book. If you can handle that and the previous x amount of paragraphs and the following x amount of paragraphs, you're golden. If that sort of makes that thing

I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. I really enjoyed this story, particularly since it was local to Sweden, but I don't really understand why so many have given this book 5 stars. Yes, there's an edge to it that makes it relevant and cool, but there isn't really anything unique to the underlying mysteries/stories in this novel that we haven't seen or read somewhere else. Although Larsson attempts to give these storylines a fresh edge via the characters, locations, etc., there is nothing ...more

I was really looking forward to reading this book; what a waste of time it turned out to be. Flat characters, stilted dialogue, flimsy mysteries, boring tech and financial talk, blah blah blah blah. It looks like I'm in the minority here, but I thought the book sucked. It's safe to say that I will not be reading the other two in the series. ...more

I just finished Girl with a Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson for a GR challenge. Why did I wait so long to get to this popular series? I was drawn into the mystery immediately. I enjoyed the characters. I found the writing to be solid. However, I thought the book was far stronger initially and began to weaken toward the end. Part 4 gave us far too facile and predictable resolutions. The dialogue drifted into dull, formulaic exchanges. Half way through the book, I was certain I would devour the rem ...more

Exciting and fast paced. It turns out most of the readers in my family had loved this one so I decided to check it out, even though I'm not really a mystery reader. But it was good, and I read it in a day, which was all I really wanted. ...more

I liked the characters a lot and the plot almost as much, but the writing seemed strangely clunky sometimes. Maybe it was the english translation, although not always - for example, I get the importance of knowing that Lisbeth has an expensive, state of the art computer, but I don't need to know the make, model and RAM size. This is info that doesn't age well, so why give it? Every time Mikael makes a sandwich or buys groceries we are told every detail about what's between the bread or in the ba ...more

It took a perfect storm of events for me to pick up this much-hyped book, namely, I read through all the books I brought on vacation and the B&B had this one on the bookswap shelf. Not to mention the massive buildup of pressure from friends and family (except you, Megan, I should have listened!) that if only I would "put up with the slow opening and give the series a try, the last book would be totally worth it!" Which is what, in another 1000+ pages of Swedish white-collar corporational legales ...more

Surprisingly, I really liked this book. There has been so much hype that I was concerned that it would be a let-down. It did not have the immediate grab that others have mentioned but it was non-putdownable shortly after it began. Yes, the girl has a variety of issues which are speculated, much later in the book, to be Aspergers. That just makes everything that happens when others took advantage of her even more sickening...if that is possible.

When I read about Nazi's they are usually German, n
