After closing the book I'm feeling 4 stars, but I know that looking back it will rise to 5, so why wait. This is a brutal book about a brutal lives, made ultra readable and compelling thanks to a large cast of fascinating characters, much wit, and James' astounding ability to juggle a thousand plot points and weave them together in a way that keeps everything clear and moving along. Set in the turbulent Jamaica of the 1970s, this is the story of the failed assassination attempt on Bob Marley (referred to as The Singer) told through the voices of the characters involved. Political rivalries, backed up by rival gangs, the meddling of the CIA and the opportunism of Cuban drug dealers are all revealed against a backdrop of escalating violence, and a wave of crime that stretches from the ghetto of Copenhagen City to the Bronx.

I gave it a few chapters before I decided that it was lurid but phony--that there are no human beings in it--and then I gave it up. I was rather disappointed to have to do so.
