Hardy is reported to have considered this his finest novel, and it is certainly one of his most powerful and convincing ones. The relationships between his characters are nuanced and realistic, without obvious heroes and villains, and he relies less on Fate and silly coincidences (though there are a few) than in some of his more melodramatic offerings.

So very atmospheric. The trees live beside the reader, who is immersed in the forest and it's life. I loved this. I felt as if I were walking through the trees, enjoying every moment.
It's been years since I've read a book by Hardy. I was surprised that he tackled double standards between genders, questioned the status quo of following societal rules/traditions, the need to follow the wants of others and therefore not follow one's own heart.
