This book was on the shelves in the cottage at my grandmother's farm where I spent my summers while I was growing up, and I came to love it. The casual way in which Martin Johnson described his wonderful adventures, the excitement in the 1940s and 1950s of reading about darkest Africa, captured my imagination.
I realize now that its view of the Africans is as politically incorrect as it is possible to be, but it was still a wonderful book for a young boy to grow his imagination. ...more
